IMSP PODCAST: MEET ALUMNA Laura van Steeg

“At IMSP, we were always taught how to speak to people, to be mindful, to listen to one another, and that really helped when it came to making new friends. Once you have friends, everything else is simple. Everything else, you can figure out.

A warm welcome to this week’s guest on the IMSP alumni podcast, Laura van Steeg. Spending her early years immersed in Montessori education, Laura went on to study at a secondary school that shares this same educational framework. Speaking with our host Mariana, Laura reveals how her time at IMSP helped ease her transition into a new community. Drawing on her Grace and Courtesy lessons, Laura was ready to take on the world.

Laura in her own words:

Hello, my name is Laura van Steeg and I’m 17 years old. I started going to IMSP when I was in third grade and then I left after the fifth grade to go to Duhovka Gymnazium. I love acting in the theatre and I’ve been a part of the Montessori Model United Nations.

A child’s need for external order is present as early as childbirth and peaks in their second year, before fading at about the age of 5. This period of development helps a child to develop a connection between themselves and the world, process information and overcome challenges.

Communicating with the Toddler Child

As teachers, we are often asked what special tips or tricks we use to get children to cooperate. Most often parents ask questions like “How can I get my child more interested in dressing and eating by themselves?”or “How can we make the mornings run more smoothly?” It can feel challenging when our patience is tested, but we must remember that children are learning to develop their own will and sense of obedience which is a natural process lasting until around six years of age.

Tidy Up! An Activity Your Toddler Will Love

They’re busy sweeping, wiping, mopping, scrubbing and brushing; even almost antiquated activities, such as washing laundry by hand or polishing wood and metal objects, have their place.
